The Victorian Recreational Fishing Peak Body, VRFish is pleased with the release by Parks Victoria of the Devilbend Natural Features Reserve, management plan. The management plan creates Victoria's newest and second largest protected area on the Mornington Peninsula. Encompassing an area of 1005 hectares and "almost 250 hectares of water surface area", the plan enables the development of a sustainable recreational fishery and the largest inland fishery on the Mornington Peninsula.
VRFish CEO, Christopher Collins said, "Parks Victoria should be congratulated on the transparent and extensive planning process that was undertaken" he went on to say, "Parks Victoria has demonstrated that ecological, cultural, social and economic values are not only compatible, but when considered holistically in consultation with the community can produce desirable outcomes".
Forming part of the country of the Boonwurrung people, Devilbend Natural Features Reserve is situated 55 kms from Melbourne on Victoria's popular Mornington Peninsula. The plan protects the significant cultural heritage and important ecological values represented in the reserve as well as providing for equitable and sustainable recreation use.
VRFish would like to acknowledge and commend the efforts of local community based group, Mornington Peninsula Fly Fishers Inc. who advocated that the reserve include recreational fishing for the benefit of all Victorian fishers.
Tom Camp, Mornington Peninsula Fly Fishers member and member of the Devilbend Advisory Group, was also a key person involved in the successful VRFish consultation process with the larger Victorian recreational fishing community.
Tom Camp said, "The release of the management plan is the culmination of extensive scientific research, review and community engagement", he went further to say that "Minister Gavin Jennings, his ministerial staff and DSE (the Department of Sustainability and Environment) demonstrated real leadership by endorsing the Parks Victoria, Devilbend Natural Features Reserve management plan, which now provides a terrific opportunity for all members of the community to enjoy this park".
