Freshwater fishos have been counting down for weeks and expressing their excitement to catch their first cod of the season via social media. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murray cod are arguably our most iconic native, freshwater species. We often see fishers quests to find a lustrous metre-plus cod online. When practicing catch and release, adopting better handling practices can help cod to survive post-release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Care for Cod follows a simple four point plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em>Be prepared<\/em> | Have your cod gloves, knotless net and long-nose pliers ready for a catch.<\/li><li><em>Reduce air time<\/em> | Minimise the time the cod spends out of the water to under 30 seconds. Where possible, leave the cod in the water.<\/li><li><em>Gently does it<\/em> | Support the cod\u2019s body<\/li><li><em>Use the right gear<\/em> | When baiting fishing use circle hooks and a tight line to avoid deep hooking the fish, also reduce fight time by using heavier gear.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p><span class=\"fmKbFWuZqdSHvR7BVx1J8kjeg\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Better Handling for Murray Cod\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2NGRTKFxYec?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MURRAY COD LIMITS\ufeff<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Murray Cod have a bag limit of one in rivers and two in specific lakes and impoundments. They carry a minimum size limit of 55 cm and maximum size limit of 75cm.
