The Federal government has releases a discussion paper to support consultation to inform the development of the Commonwealth Fisheries Resource Sharing Framework.

In fisheries, resource sharing is a process where the available fish that can be sustainably harvested is allocated across different fishing sectors to maximise the value to the community.

The Federal Government are wanting to hear directly from all those involved with Commonwealth fisheries, including recreational fishers, to better understand complex fisheries resource sharing issues, and to learn about stakeholders’ needs and expectations from a framework.

Considering recreational fishing has only had legislative recognition at the Federal level for two years, it will be important to ensure that social values of recreational fishing are recognised and re-allocation processes are sufficiently defined.
