Cod season is finally here! Have you reeled in your first cod of the season yet?!

If you are targeting our iconic Murray cod, be sure to check out the Care for COd campaign. We've partnered with the Victorian Fisheries Authority and Native Fish Australia ( NFA ) Vic to encourage recfishers to adopt better handling practices when practicing catch and release to help cod to survive post-release. 𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗖𝗛 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗗 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗥𝗪𝗢𝗡 🐟

Last week, @corangamitecma (CCMA), @fisheriesvic and local recfishers released 45,000 juvenile estuary perch into the Barwon River.

The first stocking of estuary perch in the Barwon River was in 2018. Since then, more than 220,000 EP's have been released into the river! 👏

According to CCMA, restocking the Barwon with EP's aims to establish an endemic fish population that would have been in greater numbers historically. Over the past five years, 700 tonnes of in-stream woody habitat has been installed in the Barwon River downstream of Gundog Lane to the Barwon Tidal Barrage. The woody habitat supports our native fish populations and the contribution of recreational anglers to our revegetation programs in this part of the river in recent years.

For more than 25 years, our volunteer members have been the heart and soul of VRFish. While we employ a small team of professional staff, it's our membership who raise issues and achieve big wins for Victorian recfishers. Meet our newest Fishing Club Supporter member, Dungula Maniga Banga incorporated

VRFish attended the club launch at Shepparton over the Cod opening weekend. The event was opened by elder Merle Miller who performed the Welcome to Country in Yorta Yorta language.

Dungula Maniga Banga is Victoria’s second indigenous fishing club and their Club President is Steven “Freddy” Morrison. The club’s mission is to advance Reconciliation through recreational fishing, get people out on country together and protect our rivers.

Dunglua Maniga Banga is Yorta Yorta language for Murray River Fishing and Hunting Club.
