The Victorian Fisheries Authority's hatchery teams The Victorian Fisheries Authority's hatchery teams at Snobs and Arcadia have been busy stocking fish right across the state! 🐟

Summer is native stocking season, so we've seen huge numbers of Murray cod and golden perch stocked into Victorian waterways.

VRFish Board member, Rita Caulfield (📸), her husband Mick and other volunteers, recently helped the Victorian Fisheries Authority to stock more than 300,000 Murray cod into Lake Eildon! 🐟

Macquarie perch and trout cod have also have also been stocked to help support the recovery of the threatened species.

Last week, the Snobs team released more than 89,000 Macquarie perch into 6 waters including Goulburn River (Yea - Trawool), King River, Ovens River, Kiewa River, Broken River (Nillahcootie – Swanpool) and Lake Dartmouth. At the end of January, trout cod was stocked into the Campaspe and Goulburn rivers.

Opera house nets are deadly traps for our iconic wildlife and are banned in all Victorian public and private waters. Air-breathing animals, like platypus, can become trapped in these nets and drown. Open-top nets allow platypus to escape safely and are great at catching yabbies!

Teaching the next generation how to fish is a fant Teaching the next generation how to fish is a fantastic way to foster a love of fishing and it's a great way to spend quality time together creating memories that will last a lifetime.

For many parents, there is nothing better than being able to share a love of fishing with their kids and seeing the excitement on a child's face as they reel in their first fish quickly becomes a treasured family memory.

We'd love to hear your favourite memory of fishing with your family - share them with us below! 👇

At VRFish, we promote fishing as a recreational activity with significant social, cultural and economic benefits. We want to ensure the next generation are given the same opportunities to get outdoors and get hooked on fishing as when we were growing up.
Would you like to be able to fish at Yan Yean Rese Would you like to be able to fish at Yan Yean Reservoir? Then make sure you tell Melbourne Water!

Melbourne Water is calling for feedback on the draft Future Directions Plan for Yan Yean Reservoir which will guide the development of Yan Yean Reservoir Park and presents opportunities for the introduction of new recreational activities – like fishing.

Yan Yean Reservoir is located around 40km north of Melbourne and is Victoria’s oldest water supply. There is a productive redfin fishery in the reservoir, however, Yan Yean Reservoir is closed to recreational fishing.

It has the potential to become a fantastic, family-friendly fishing spot if public access to the reservoir is supported.

You can now have your say and let Melbourne Water know if you want to see recreational fishing introduced at Yan Yean Reservoir and the value a new family-friendly fishing spot would add to the local community.

Find out more and complete the online survey on Melbourne Water’s website here: https://letstalk.melbournewater.com.au/yan-yean-reservoir

The survey closes Sunday, 8 March. Melbourne Water are also hosting community information sessions, in-person and online, through February 2026.
