Call for volunteers to contribute to eel study

Do you go fishing for eels? Are you interested in contributing to fisheries research? Then you might be able to participate in a PhD study at the University of Wollongong led by Alexis Farr, as part of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research project in the School of Geography and Sustainable Communities.

The research, “Slippery Connections: Understanding the shortfin eel (Anguilla Australis) for fisheries management in Australia & Aotearoa,” will gather diverse and place-based knowledges of the southern shortfin eel (Anguilla australis), with an aim to inform more socially and ecologically just pathways for eel fisheries management in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

As eels are caught recreationally in Victoria as food, but also as bait, Alexis would like to speak with recreational fishers representing either or both approaches.

To contribute to the study, you’ll be asked to participate in a single 30–90-minute semi-structured interview that explores your connections to and knowledge of shortfin eels, and experiences of their management.

To find out more about the study, and if you’d like to participate, view the Participant Information Sheet here.

Alexis is commencing her fieldwork with a trip to Victoria next month (March), and can travel to meet participants wherever is convenient to them.

If you have any questions or would like to participate in the research, please contact the student researcher Alexis Farr at [email protected]
