Celebrating International Women’s Day

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and the important contribution women make towards making fishing better in Victoria.

In our recreational fishing sector, there are women achieving great things through advocating for recreational fishers, driving projects that make fishing better, pursuing careers in the industry, taking on leadership roles and promoting recreational fishing to encourage more women and young girls to get involved.

In recent years, the recreational fishing sector has become more inclusive as women take on more leadership roles within their fishing clubs, organisations such as VRFish and get involved in initiatives like the Women in Recreational Fishing and Boating (WIRFAB) network.

We know it’s important to encourage women to get into leadership positions at VRFish as this will filter through to our member organisations and the wider recreational fishing community. To lead the way, VRFish is proud to have achieved gender equity on our Board. We also have female members who are actively representing recreational fishers through VRFish reference groups as well as in stakeholder groups. And, at an organisational level, two-thirds of our staff are women pursuing careers in the industry.

A sincere thank you to the women who are making fishing better in Victoria. Whether you are on our Board, a VRFish member or part of the wider recreational fishing community, your tireless efforts will have a lasting impact on our sector.
