Consultation on new year-round Murray cod fisheries

In February, we asked Murray cod fishers to take part in an online survey to share which waters you’d love to see become year-round Murray cod fisheries. Lake Eppalock, Cairn Curran Reservoir, and Lake Nillahcootie were in the top four waters identified by more than 1,000 recreational fishers.

Now, the Victorian Fisheries Authority are consulting with recreational fishers on a proposal to remove the three-month closed season for Murray cod at lakes Nillahcootie and Eppalock as well as Cairn Curran Reservoir.

These waters are stocked with thousands of Murray cod annually and research has shown that natural breeding in lakes and impoundments is typically very low, meaning the closed season has very little benefit in these waters.
