Decommissioning of oil and gas infrastructure in Bass Strait

After operating for over 50 years, many of the Bass Strait oil and gas fields operated by ExxonMobil Australia’s subsidiary Esso are now reaching the end of their productive life. Due to this, Esso is planning for the decommission process.

In Bass Strait, ExxonMobil Australia Pty Ltd, owns and operates assets that consist of 421 wells, 19 platforms, six subsea facilities and more than 800 kilometres of subsea pipeline. These assets form part of the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture between Esso and Woodside Energy (Bass Strait) Pty Ltd (Woodside Energy) and the Kipper Unit Joint Venture (Esso, Woodside Energy, and Mitsui E&P Australia Pty Ltd). Of these assets, 13 of the platforms, four subsea facilities, 26 pipelines and around half of all wells, no longer produce oil and gas.

In consultation with stakeholders, Esso is progressing the safe shutdown and decommissioning of the non-producing Bass Strait facilities. Work is expected to commence in 2027.

To consult with and understand community concerns, Esso are hosting a range of community information sessions during August 2025.
