Potential Spring Fresh for Melbourne Cup Day

Supplied by West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (WGCMA)

Spring in West Gippsland brings a flurry of activity for our rivers and native fish. The WGCMA Environmental Water team is preparing “spring freshes” for the Thomson and Macalister Rivers to boost river health and support fish migration.

If conditions allow, the Thomson will receive its largest flow over the Melbourne Cup long weekend, with the Macalister to follow. These short bursts of higher flows help native species like Australian bass, Tupong, and eels move upstream to breed, while also improving streamside vegetation.

Timing depends on weather, so check out the WGCMA’s current releases webpage for updates.
