Don’t rely on AI for fishing rules

When you’re going fishing, and want to make sure you’re doing the right thing by following the fishing rules, don’t rely on AI to tell you the correct fishing rules.

We get it. You want an answer and fast. But relying on AI overviews means you’re often getting incorrect information as it draws information from lots of different online sources to generate its answer. Which means it’s not always taking information from a reliable source.

From bag and size limits, to open and closed seasons, to the gear you can use and where you can fish, AI overviews can be misleading and provide misinformation. In fact, sometimes follow-up searches will provide different answers to the same question, proving that AI responses cannot be relied on for accurate fishing rules or information.

A Victorian fisher recently shared an AI response they received after asking a question about the species stocked in their local lake – it stated that the lake is filled with Australian “native” species European carp, and redfin. Thankfully, they knew this answer sounded a bit fishy.

To ensure you’re following the correct rules and regulations, go straight to the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s recreational fishing guide to find out the answer, use:

  • the latest Victorian recreational fishing guide
  • the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s website
  • the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s Vic Fishing smart phone app
  • If in doubt, you can also contact the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s customer service centre on 136 186
