The Burnanga Indigenous Fishing Club recently hosted a special Women’s Fishing Day at the Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery.
The day started with a Welcome to Country including a smoking ceremony and traditional dancers, and special guest speakers including Yorta Yorta women sharing their wisdom and experiences and Parliamentary Secretary for First Peoples Christine Couzens.
There were plenty of activities for attendees to get involved in, cultural workshops, information stalls, children’s activities and, of course, a chance to wet a line!
Everyone was excited to have a go at fishing Arcadia’s fish-out pond. The pond is stocked regularly with catchable-size Murray cod, silver perch, and golden perch. Throughout the day, mainly Murray cod was caught by fishers.
It was an incredible event by the Burnanga Indigenous Fishing Club that was about more than just fishing – it was a fantastic day of connection, empowerment, and fun as we celebrated the incredible women in our community.
