Portsea Pier to close for maintenance works in July

Portsea Pier, along the western tip of the Mornington Peninsula, is set to temporarily close to the public for major maintenance works in July 2026.

The major maintenance works at Portsea Pier are in response to the significant storm damage experienced in 2024. While emergency repairs were undertaken shortly after the storm event to maintain safe access, more substantial maintenance works are required to strengthen the structural integrity of the pier to support its ongoing use.

The scope of major maintenance works will be focused on replacing deteriorated timber piles, crossheads and beams, with additional works to the decking on the pier head.

To ensure the works are undertaken safely, Portsea Pier will be temporarily closed to the public. Parks Victoria have stated that the works will be delivered in stages – starting at the pier entrance and progressing outwards along the pier.

As part of the closure, Parks Victoria will establish a marine exclusion zone at the Portsea Pier, and some temporary changes to pedestrian and vehicle access near the pier entrance may also be needed to ensure people’s safety while the maintenance works are underway.

We know Portsea Pier is a popular spot for calamari fishing during winter and divers love the lower landing. However, it’s really important that this work is completed to ensure the safety of pier users. Parks have scheduled these works at the quietest time of year to limit the impact on as many users as possible.

Works are scheduled to begin in July 2026, weather permitting, and are expected to be completed in time for summer.

While Portsea Pier is closed, piers at Sorrento, Blairgowrie and Rye will all still be open and available for use.
