VRFish has been contacted by the Star of the South project who are investigating the feasibility of Australia’s first proposed offshore wind project in Commonwealth waters, off the coast of Port Albert.
An exploration lease was granted by the Australian Government in March 2019 for Star of the South to investigate:
- Measuring wind and wave conditions
- Studies to understand more about the seabed
- Marine mammal, bird and other environmental studies
- Community and stakeholder consultation to understand local perspectives
- Transmission, grid and engineering capacity studies
- Economic studies, including identifying opportunities for local industry.
The project is now consulting with the community and industry, including recreational fishers. During September the project will be hosting information sessions around the Gippsland region. You can also share your feedback through a survey and register for their communications.
To learn more about the project visit their website and check out theirFrequently Asked Questions page.
While it’s still very early days in the project, VRFish will be seeking to work closely with the project proponent and Government to ensure we maintain access to our waters and our fishery.
