The winter school holidays are upon us. While the weather may be a tad chilly, the school holidays are the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air while the kids reel in the fun!
Fishing is a great activity to participate in with your family as it can be enjoyed by all ages, allows you to connect with nature, has multiple health benefits and it’s a great form of exercise. As an added bonus, if you do catch a feed, you will have a delicious and nutritious protein-rich meal to take home to enjoy as a family.
There are so many great opportunities to wet a line across the state and during the school holidays there are a range of free fishing clinics that your kids can get involved in.
EVENTS
Below we’ve compiled events that will be held during the winter (June/July) school holidays.
FISHCARE FISHING CLINICS
Fishcare Victoria is a community based not-for-profit organisation promoting responsible and sustainable fishing practices. Fishcare typically run kids fishing clinics across the state throughout the school holidays.
Over the winter school holidays, Fishcare will be hosting fishing clinics at Mornington, Albert Park, Portarlington and Geelong.

THAT’S THE THING ABOUT FISHING CLINICS
That’s The Thing About Fishing is a not for profit organisation focused on helping to support people with disabilities, mental health issues, youth at risk, indigenous peoples, kids and families by using fishing as a therapeutic way to help people deal with day to day issues.
Over the winterschool holidays, That’s The Thing About Fishing will be hosting fishing clinics at Frankston Pier and Patterson Lakes (Launching Way).

FAMILY FISHING LAKES
For a family-friendly day out, you cannot go wrong with taking your family to a family fishing lake. These lakes are located throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria. When stocking the lakes prior to the school holidays, the Victorian Fisheries Authority stock ready-to-catch rainbow trout as they typically respond to a variety of baits and lures making it easy to reel in a fish. The lakes bode good access making them a great option for families looking to wet a line.

VRFISH CODE OF CONDUCT
VRFish have also developed a Code of Conduct for recreational boat, shore, river, stream and jetty fishers in Victoria.
We have a responsibility to look after our fisheries resources for the benefit of the environment and future generations of fishers and show respect for other users of the aquatic environment. We love fishing and encourage all fishers to adopt the below guidelines.

Whether it’s fish habitat, water security and quality, fishing access and infrastructure or best practice, we aim to work in partnership to make sure Victoria’s fishing experiences continue to improve, be sustainable and more enjoyable for all generations of Victorians.
