Victorian recfishers were lining the banks across the state on Sunday to celebrate Gone Fishing Day. Whether they attended an event or opted to wet a line with friends and family, lots of recfishers took the opportunity to go fishing.
Gone Fishing Day is our symbolic day as recreational fishers to celebrate our favourite pastime and enjoy the benefits of fishing.
To celebrate Gone Fishing Day, fishing clubs across the state held events to celebrate the day and encourage more people to get out fishing. Some of the highlights from our member clubs are included below.
Kyneton Angling Club in conjunction with the RSL Active Veterans hosted an event at Upper Coliban Reservoir which saw 75 people in attendance. Including members of both Kyneton Angling Club and the RSL Active Veterans as well as members of the public. The biggest fish caught was a 74cm carp and the smallest was a 23cm rainbow trout.
Down south at Lake Bullen Merri, Camperdown Angling Club, Cobden Angling Club and Lake Purrumbete Angling Club hosted a family fishing day. It was a great success for the clubs with 87 anglers participating in the day. Noah Riches caught the winning fish with a 58cm tiger trout.
In Casterton, Casterton Angling Society saw 32 juniors and 13 adults join their Gone Fishing Day event. Their participants had a great day catching some quality fish, with many juniors outfishing the adults and had a ball fishing with those around them.
National Gone Fishing Day is an opportunity for Australians to come together, celebrate our shared love of fishing, and recognise the many benefits which this timeless tradition enriches our lives.
The benefits of fishing extend far beyond the act itself, with national survey results indicating that fishing has a positive impact on your health, reducing stress and anxiety while promoting mindfulness and balance.
Gone Fishing Day is an initiative of the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation (ARFF), the peak national body and key voice for Australia’s recreational fishing community.
