GB Energy is developing the Golden Beach Energy Storage Project – an offshore gas storage project in Gippsland.
The project will initially produce natural gas from the Golden Beach Gas Field in the Gippsland Basin, just over 4 km offshore from Golden Beach (in Victorian State waters), before transitioning to an underground gas storage facility. Gas will travel via a bi-directional underground pipeline to an onshore Gas Processing Facility near Longford.
To engage with the community regarding the project, the GB Energy team are hosting several community information sessions in the coming weeks.

About the Project
According to the project website, the offshore storage facility will enable new gas to be injected at times of low gas demand (often in summer), and withdrawn again at times of higher demand (usually winter). The completed offshore infrastructure will have a ‘small footprint on the seabed’ and be surrounded by a 500-metre safety and protection zone. The project is currently planning to commence operations as a flexible storage facility in 2029.
The Project has been granted key approvals including both the Victorian Environment Effects Act 1978 and the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
GB Energy is planning to commence a gas drilling campaign in late 2026, just over 4km from Golden Beach township, and in water depth of approximately 20-metres. It will take around 140 days to complete the drilling activities which will be conducted 24/7. During that time, there will be a 500-metre Petroleum Safety Zone (PSZ) established around the drilling rig in line with Australian offshore safety regulations.
