Blue Mackerel is proposed to be one of the first offshore wind projects off Gippsland after the project was awarded a feasibility licence by the Australian Government in April 2024.
The proposed Blue Mackerel offshore wind project is located off the coast of Brataualung and Tatungalung Country, Gippsland, approximately 10km from Seaspray, Victoria.
If approved, the Blue Mackerel project will consist of 163km2 of the feasibility site and approximately 60 wind turbines will generate 1GW of electricity once operational.
Blue Mackerel is currently in the feasibility, design and approvals phase. During this phase,
detailed environmental assessments and marine surveys will be conducted.

ACTIVITY NOTICE – Deploying seabed equipment
The Blue Mackerel team have shared an activity statement regarding their upcoming activities in July 2025 and beyond. See below.
As part of ongoing environmental studies in our offshore wind feasibility licence area, Blue Mackerel will be deploying Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) systems at three locations. This seabed equipment will gather data to help us understand underwater noise levels and the presence of whales, dolphins, and tagged white sharks.
Timing
Weather permitting, the vessel is expected to depart Port Welshpool on 16 July 2025. Deployment is anticipated to take 2 to 3 days, after which the equipment will remain in place for up to two years.
All timings are approximate and subject to vessel availability and weather conditions.
