Reel in your line when a boat approaches

As the weather warms up, more fishers and boaters are heading out to make the most of Victoria’s fantastic fishing opportunities.

With more fishers out and about, it’s worth remembering that a little patience and respect can make everyone’s day a whole lot better. Nothing spoils a day faster than conflict between fishers or boaters.

Recently, concerns have been raised at Mordialloc, where there has been some tension between boaters entering the Bay via the channel and land-based anglers fishing off the pier. Due to the presence of the reef to the south of the pier, boaters need to hug the pier to remain within the channel.

If you’re fishing from a jetty or pier and see a vessel approaching, you must reel in your lines to allow safe passage. Failing to do so isn’t just frustrating for boaters – it’s actually an offence under the Port Regulations. It’s a requirement that a person who is in possession of, or in charge of, a fishing rod or fishing line on a wharf in a local port must ensure that the rod or line is retrieved from the water and any space between the wharf and a vessel approaching or departing from that wharf.

Whether you’re in a boat, on a pier, on a bank, or diving, we all love fishing and want to enjoy our time on the water with our friends and family. By showing respect on the water, everyone gets to enjoy the great fishing Victoria has on offer.
