Catch a Rainbow! Get Hooked on Fly Fishing with Red Tag Fly Fishers’ IDAHOBIT Event

Supplied Red Tag Fly Fishers

Looking for a fun activity that takes you to beautiful places by the water in the natural environment, where you might even catch a rainbow (trout)?

The Red Tag Fly Fishers are hosting a ‘Come and Try’ day for the LGBTQIA+ community on Saturday 16 May to celebrate IDAHOBIT – International day against LGBTIQA+ discrimination.

Red Tag’s friendly club members will introduce you to the fascinating art of fly fishing and help you catch a ‘rainbow’ using a fishing simulator. You’ll be guided through fun activities including an introduction to equipment (think – rods, reels, flys, nets), fly tying and casting. We want folks to get a taste for fly fishing and start their fly fishing adventures with us.  Down the track, we can show them how to catch (and release) a rainbow (trout that is!).

There will be prizes, competitions, party bags and a light lunch to keep up your energy levels! We’ll have activities outdoors and inside, so bad weather won’t stop us, and all equipment will be supplied.  Come along, bring your crew and join in the fun – we’re keen to get you hooked!

The event details are:

  • When: Saturday 16 May 2026, 10am – 2pm
  • Where: Fairlea Reserve Netball Pavillion, Cnr Fairlea & Yarra Bend Roads Fairfield
  • Register:  Places are limited, so register to secure your spot at www.redtagflyfishers.com.au
  • Registrations close on: 12 May 2026

This free event is proudly supported by Yarra City Council

Red Tag Fly Fishers Club was founded in 1932 with a commitment to sharing the art and joy of fly fishing.

The club believe that fly fishing is more than catching fish — it’s a mindful journey of connection, community, and conservation.

May 17 is the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination (IDAHOBIT).
