Fishing clubs are a significant part of the commun Fishing clubs are a significant part of the community and our recreational fishing sector. They provide recreational fishers with the opportunity to come together, learn, socialise and enjoy some friendly competition.

They’re also the backbone of many local and regional projects and generously give their time back to the sport they love. They regularly host a range of events to drive an increase in fishing participation. From sharing knowledge to fostering a sense of community, fishing clubs have a positive impact on our sector.

There are more than 150 VRFish fishing club and association members across the state that would love to have you join their club!

To find your local club, visit our website here: https://www.vrfish.com.au/about/club-and-association-members
VRFish is thrilled that a re-elected Labor Governm VRFish is thrilled that a re-elected Labor Government has committed to opening Yan Yean reservoir to fishing, by funding a fishing feasibility plan!

VRFish advocated for new inland fisheries to be developed close to Melbourne, including Yan Yean Reservoir, as part of its 2026 State Election Policy.

This week by Member for Yan Yean, Lauren Kathage MP, announced a $200,000 fishing feasibility plan for the reservoir.

Yan Yean Reservoir is rumoured to have an excellent population of native and introduced fish; however, it is currently closed to recreational fishing. This is the first step to developing Yan Yean into a fantastic, family-friendly fishing spot.

VRFish Chair Rob Loats said, “Opening Yan Yean Reservoir to fishing provides another commonsense outcome necessary to growing recreational fishing in Victoria. It builds upon our advocacy work over recent work to open Tarago Reservoir to fishing and allowing boating at Hepburn Lagoon, Tullaroop, Barkers Creek, Malmsbury, Lauriston and Upper Coliban reservoirs.”

VRFish developed our Election Priorities to advocate for better recreational fishing ahead of November's Victorian State Election. This demonstrates the benefit of having a strong and independent peak body.

We'll keep you updated as recreational fishing commitments are made by Victorian political parties.

Over the weekend, the Ballarat Fly Fishers Club he Over the weekend, the Ballarat Fly Fishers Club held the 84th Wastell Trophy in Ballarat with around 80 fly fishers converging on Ballarat to take part in one of Australia's most historic and respected fly fishing competitions.

A number of fishing clubs were represented in the competition including Ballarat Fly Fishers Club, Red Tag Fly Fishers Club, Mornington Peninsula Fly Fishers Club, Southern Fly Fishers Club, and Goulburn Valley Fly Fishers Club.

Across the two-day event, 30 brown and rainbow trout had been officially recorded, with countless missed opportunities ensuring plenty of motivation for anglers to return for future Wastell Trophies. The majority of fish were taken from Lake Wendouree, with additional trout caught at Moorabool and Newlyn Reservoir.

The winner of the 84th Wastell Trophy was Ballarat Fly Fishers Club President Bill Reddick - with his 58cm brown trout!

Congratulations Bill! 👏🏆
