New Conservation Hatchery to Support Fish Populations

A new conservation fish hatchery at Snobs Creek will help to support threatened fish species, including the vulnerable species that were impacted by the 2019-20 bushfires.

Freshwater species such as Macquarie perch and several galaxiid species from Gippsland were impacted by the devastating 2019-20 bushfires and will benefit from the new hatchery as it will focus on increasing their populations.

Threatened species purple spotted gudgeon and South Gippsland spiny crayfish will also be bred at the new hatchery to support their populations.

Scientists, Traditional Owners and industry will work collaboratively on breeding and release programs, community education and improving genetic diversity to help the threatened species to thrive in our waterways and enhance their populations.

The new hatchery will feature state-of-the-art equipment including new aquariums and recirculation systems. It is a partnership between the Victorian Government and the Commonwealth Government and is expected to open in April 2023.
