River Trout Season Opens on Saturday

After a long, cold winter, it’s finally time to get back on the river in search of trout! This year, trout river and stream season open kicks off on Saturday 3 September 2022.

There is an impressive variety of trout and salmonids for anglers to target in Victoria including brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, tiger trout, cheetah trout and chinook salmon. There are so many great fishing spots to catch trout along the Goulburn River, Mitta Mitta River and Rubicon River as well as many other lakes and reservoirs across the state.

In the lead up to trout opening, the Victorian Fisheries Authority will be stocking 2,000 stonker rainbow trout, weighing a collective 7 tonnes, in the Goulburn River and Eildon Pondage. Each of the trout will individually weigh up to 5kg. View the map below to see the 11 sites that will receive stinker trout.
