How Victorians go spearfishing and diving

Whether you’re diving to catch a cray or spearfishing in search of snapper, Victoria has great diving and spearfishing opportunities along the coast.

We recently asked Victorian spearfishers and divers to share how they go spearfishing and diving through an online survey. An invitation to complete the survey was sent to our e-newsletter subscribers and members, shared via our social media platforms and posted on our website.

Over a five-week period between December 2022 and January 2023, we received 439 responses to the survey.

For those who selected other, the most listed fish species included: 
Sweep (27), Morwong (18), Scallops (14), Boarfish (8), Wrasse (7), Flounder (7), Trumpeter (5), Sea urchins (5), Goatfish (4), Butterfish (4), Bream (3), Magpie perch (2), Garfish (2) and Luderick (2).


For those who selected other, the most listed locations included:
Mornington Peninsula (10), Flinders (4), Wilsons Promontory (4),Portsea (3), Port Fairy (3), Black Rock (2), Cape Conran (2).
