Established in 1932, The Red Tag Fly Fishers is a recreational fly fishing club based in Yarra Bend Park Fairfield. We have a rich history of being committed to the sport of fly fishing and protecting the environment in which we fish. With over 170 members, we practice ‘catch and release’ fishing and engage in all aspects of fly fishing including fly tying, casting, casting competitions and club fishing trips.
Like ‘regular’ fishing, fly fishing offers many benefits including connection with nature, enhanced wellbeing and physical health, care for the environment, social connection and participation in community life. Red Tag provides a welcoming, friendly environment and a safe space for all our members. We love fly fishing! And we are keen to share our passion with the LGBTIQA+ community so they too can discover its joys and benefits.
Red Tag Fly Fishers’ IDAHOBIT Event
Proudly supported by the City of Yarra, the club is hosting a ‘come and try’ day for the LGBTIQA+ community on Saturday 17 May which is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia or ‘IDAHOBIT from 10am to 1pm. The event is called, Catch a Rainbow – Get Hooked on Fly Fishing with Red Tag Fly Fishers and it aims to broaden participation in fly fishing by connecting with the LGBTIQA+ community.
Participants who attend will be guided through fun activities designed to introduce them to the amazing world of fly fishing including an introduction to equipment (think – rods, reels, flys, nets), fly tying and casting. There will be prizes and giveaways and participants will also enjoy a light lunch. We want folks to get a taste for fly fishing and start their fly fishing adventures with us. Down the track, we can show them how to catch (and release) a rainbow (trout that is!).
All equipment will be supplied, so come along and try your hand at casting a line, tying a fly and checking out the gear – dressing up is half the fun!
