Glenelg Hopkins Regional Waterway Strategy

Glenelg Hopkins CMA is calling on community members to share their thoughts, ideas and hopes for the region’s rivers, wetlands and estuaries as work begins on a new Glenelg Hopkins Regional Waterway Strategy.

The new strategy will guide how waterways are cared for over the next decade, and community voices are essential in getting it right.

The Glenelg Hopkins Regional Waterway Strategy (RWS) is the region’s ten-year plan for managing, protecting and enhancing waterways. This is the third RWS for the region. The first two strategies delivered significant benefits for the Glenelg Hopkins community, as well as rivers, wetlands and estuaries including:

  • 1786 ha revegetation,
  • 428 km fencing,
  • 13488 ha weed control, and,
  • 556 structures to improve aquatic habitat and connectivity.

Building on the two previous strategies, the updated Glenelg Hopkins RWS will include:

  • Increased Traditional Owner self‑determination and leadership.
  • Stronger emphasis on climate adaptation, mitigation and long‑term resilience.
  • A strategic, high‑level direction supported by detailed implementation planning.
  • A continued focus on collaboration and building on past investment and community feedback.
  • Greater focus on risk management to ensure the strategy is achievable.
