Goulburn-Murray Water will be changing how and when they store and release water from the Victorian Mid-Murray Storages, including Lake Boga, Kangaroo Lake, Lake Charm and Ghow Swamp.
Goulburn-Murray Water will be changing how they operate the Victorian Mid-Murray Storages and are asking the community to share any concerns, suggestions or questions regarding the changes.
From 1 July 2026, Goulburn-Murray Water will be making some changes to how the Victorian Mid-Murray Storages are operated. Going forward, they will be changing how and when they store and release water from Lake Boga, Kangaroo Lake and Lake Charm. The operation of Ghow Swamp is being reviewed as part of a separate process.
Through implementing these operational changes, there will be some impacts on the water levels (more fluctuations) and improved salinity concentrations (salt levels) of the lakes of the Victorian Mid-Murray Storages. Due to this, it’s expected that the changing water levels are likely to impact some recreational activities at the lakes. In particular, Lake Boga, as the water in the lake might be lowered or fluctuate more often.
According to Goulburn-Murray Water, the operational changes are needed for a range of factors including:
- Optimise the operation of the storages for Murray entitlement holders
- The increasing challenges of operating the Murray River
- Responding to spikes in demand for water particularly during hot and dry periods
- Climate change
- Population growth
- Shifts in customer needs and land use
The online survey closes at 5pm Thursday, 30 April 2026.
